These apps are free and available on both IOS and Android.

  1. Nike+ running app

Cardio is one of the best ways to lose excess weight. I started using this app in January 2014 after a long December that saw me gain 6kgs in 4 weeks. I was feeling very heavy and uncomfortable. I really didn’t want to go to the gym because I was embarrassed of how big I had gotten so I decided to buy a pair of running shoes and hit the road!

This app lets you know how far you have ran, how many calories you have burnt as well as how long it takes you to run each km. There is an option of challenges which helps you push yourself. The ‘Coach’ option is great if you are planning on training for a marathon. You receive constant reminders throughout the day to motivate you for your run later on.

Since the 27th of January 2014 I have ran 240,7km in 49 runs (only road runs). This app allows you to add friends which helps you stay accountable and motivated.

 2. My Fitness Pal

This App helps you track what you are eating throughout the day. It is so easy to use as it tells you how many calories you shuld eat a day according to your goal. My Fitness Pal allows you to scan the barcode of your food so you can know how many calories are in there and if the food is within your calories range for the day. There are also options for you to insert your water intake, food, exercise and weight.

This app for great as it helps you see where most of your weight is coming from and helps you track your progress. We have all heard that when it comes to losing weight and staying healthy you have to apply the 80/20 rule which means 80% eating clean and 20% exercise. And this rule is so true! At the beginning of my fitness journey I used to work my ass off at the gym spending almost 2 hours rotating between cardio and weights. I would then get home and feel like I could reward myself and eat whatever I wanted because I had workout so hard at gym. This kind of mindset is WRONG WRONG WRONG. Your diet determines the success of your goal.

3. Plant Nanny

This app makes drinking water fun by making it a game. You water your plants with every glass of water you drink. The plans grow and harvets seeds and you use those seeds to plant other plants. I know it rounds ridiculous but watching your plant grow makes you feel so proud = you drink more water.I was introduced to this app by the Chairman at work who thought it would be cool to bet on how much water we could all drink a day. Obviously I won! This app is super cute and makes drinking water so exciting and fun. According to the app because of my height and level of activity I should be drinking 2.5 litres of water a day however I drink 3.5 litres a day because I’m an overachiever.

 4. Sweat by Kayla Itsines

I’m sure you’ve all seen those amazing #BBG body transformations on Instagram. The Bikini Body Guide is the biggest workout programme online. This app technically isn’t free however you do get a free 7 day trial run and then you have to pay R379.00 a month. I tried the 7 day free trial run and boy was I sweating! This workout programme is no joke. The workouts are the hardest 28 minutes of your life. It is a mixture of cardio (low and high intensity) and body weight training.

I recommend this for anyone who wants to start working out at home or workout out at gym but can’t afford to pay for a personal trainer. This app has new exercises each week which challenge your body. It syncs with your calendar and reminds you about your workout every day. The nutrition section was very help and informative. Great recipes that anyone can afford on a strict budget.

Hope this helps!

– With love, Nollie!
